Crew Interview: Bing Bailey – Digital Imaging Technician

By November 2, 2015 November 7th, 2015 Axanar News

Andrew Lahr is a guest writer on the Axanar blog.

Andrew: What do you think of the editing done in the newest Star Trek movies? Are you fan of the ever polarizing ‘lens flare’ technique?

Bing: I think the new Star Trek films are very well made. They are for a broader audience so in that context they work well. They aren’t necessarily made for fans of the original trek – even as big as that group is they aren’t big enough to sustain the budgets required for that level of film. So it had to be made broader and more action/character oriented. I don’t care about lens flares.

I care about story and character.

Andrew: To what extent does the ‘pathos’ of a film end up affecting your editing process? Is it difficult to find the right look for a particularly emotional or powerful scene?

Bing: Everything , every decision, if its made right, is based on the story and flows from the story. The minute you are doing something simply because its cool you are in trouble. So pathos , story, character… it all very much flows into the look of a film. It’s a subtle effect that nudges the audience in the right direction.

Bing has also worked on Star Trek: New Voyages, and the recent Star Trek; Renegades.

Andrew: What kind of software and equipment will you be working with throughout Axanar?

Bing: Davinci Resolve, High End RAID Arrays/Storage , custom-built Macs. Boatloads of memory, high-end graphics cards; it takes a lot of powerful computers to work at this level.

You aren’t going to manage that on a $600 PC.
