Captain’s Log – August 3rd, 2017

Today I woke up at 6:00am to get to the gym. Now I have had the great honor for the past year to work out at the best gym I have ever been a member of.  Ekata is not just a gym, but a place to learn martial arts, Eastern philosophy and meditation.  Ed Monaghan, the gym owner, is a student of many Eastern philosophies and Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee’s form of martial art that has been a major influence on my coaching career (I coached volleyball professionally at USC and with the USA National Team from 88-92)

So this AM I wanted to take a meditation class that Ed had been trying to get me to that starts at 7:00am.  Meditation is gaining a lot of momentum in the US and for good reason, the benefits are well known and it is amazing how many leaders, artists and people looking to maximize their potential, are using the practice.

So I got to the gym at 6:30 in time for the 7:00 class.  But when I got there Ed told me the class was at 8:00!  So I did an hour of cardio and my chest/shoulder/tricep workout.  After 90 minutes I was ready for some sitting and meditating.  So I got to the room where the class was held, and within 10 minutes I knew Ed had told me about the wrong class, as it was a martial arts/training class!  I told Ed and he and I laughed and then I toughed it out for another 90 minutes.  Needless to say, I was quite spent afterwards!

This weekend we move, so it will be a week of loading the truck and driving cross country to Atlanta.  When I get there it is back to working out as I have to get down to the 183 pounds I was when we shot Prelude in 2014.  Yeah, you knew I would tie this blog back to Axanar sooner or later!
