Captain’s Log – August 28th, 2017

Today was a busy day as Kevin Kane, of Hansa Coffee, the producer of Axanar coffee, was in town.  Kevin owns three coffee shops in Chicago and is thinking of opening one (or more) in Atlanta.  Kevin is a former investment banker who got tired of the rat race, so his passion for coffee is amazing.

Kevin came down for the volunteer weekend and this morning I took him around so he could see Atlanta, and we hit a couple of the best coffee shops so he could show me what really good coffee is!  Now, if you were one of those people who got Axanar coffee, you know what good coffee is.  Well, I got a gourmet “coffee crawl” this AM as we tried different coffees at different shops.  I can tell you I realize how mediocre Starbucks is now!

We ended our journey with lunch at My Parents Basement, the pub/comic book store in Decatur, Georgia that is absolutely epic!

With Kevin Kane at the best comic book/pub in the world!

It was then back to the studio, where Dean Newbury was hard at work finishing the work on the bridge.  Dean was pretty close to finished with the repairs, and we discussed the paint job on the pilot, tactical and Fleet Ops consoles.

Dean discusses the pilot console paint job.

With Dean was  trusty right hand, Dana Wagner.  (Does that make him the Hand of the Construction Coordinator?)Dana is a volunteer who built his own house, so the guy has skills!

The last repairs

The last repairs are the upper portions of the consoles, which were really ravaged by dismounting them and transporting them.  Dana finished about 2/3 of this today and will finish it tomorrow.

The work Dean, Dana and the team have done is AMAZING.  I can’t wait till you see the results.  More tomorrow…
