The Battle of Axanar is the climactic Federation victory of the Four Years War. Under Captain Garth of Izar, Starfleet turns the campaign; later generations at the Academy study the battle as required reading. Kirk's era still names Garth as the captain to emulate.

Prelude to Axanar presents the war and its heroes in documentary form — interviews, fleet context, and the road to Axanar rather than a conventional space-battle feature. Sister ships of the Ares-class and captains such as Sonya Alexander (U.S.S. Ajax) fill out the wartime record.
