A whirlwind day of meetings, starting off with one with Indiegogo. They love Axanar and really want our business and so have come with an aggressive offer to woo us away from Kickstarter. We have had nothing but good things to say about Kickstarter and they are great, but Indiegogo will save us about $35,000 if we hit a million dollars in fundraising. Plus they accept credit cards AND PayPal. The biggest film projects of the last year, Super Troopers II (which raised $4.5M) and Con Man (Which raised $3.2M) did so on Indiegogo. And with us planning on probably 4 campaigns next year (Two books and Tales of the Four Years War to start), we can see how each platform does. No decisions have been made, but I thought I would keep you all updated. I believe in a free flow of information and transparency, so you know what we are doing here!
After my 10:00 call with Indiegogo, I met with Oren from Geeknation, one of the top geek content providers online. Oren is an awesome guy with a great vision of online content delivery and we talked about using his facilities to live webcast our next crowdfunding campaign. Their studio is pretty cool with multiple sets to choose from, where they do a whole bunch of great online shows. Check them out!
After that, I had a lawyer meeting, but I can’t tell you much about that! Two great Star Trek fans though, who are helping us out a ton.
And here is Rob Burnett’s update:
Tobias sent TEN MORE SHOTS today, and I was able to cut them together to see a moment of how the completed scene would look and feel. I once read famed director Wim Wenders said his finished films only represented 50% of what he saw in his mind’s eye when he began them. Well… so far, in the case of this first AXANAR scene, I’m getting 110% of what was in my mind’s eye when I started making my story reel. The feature version of AXANAR has never felt more real to me than it does right now.
Be sharp!
Alec
Well do what you gota do!!! And one more time Rob For director!!!!!!
Something rubs me a little wrong with the campaigns that I have seen on Indiegogo. I imagine there are different ways to setup campaigns on both Kickstarter and Indiegogo, but the campaigns I have backed on Kickstarter, I have the opportunity to completely change my contribution to whatever I am supporting anytime during the campaign. I am also not charged until the end of the campaign. Is that the same with Indiegogo? That hasn’t been the case with the fundraisers I saw on Indiegogo with a couple of projects I considered funding. There were also people leaving comments saying that they wanted to change their contribution or cancel it altogether and that was not an option.
Whether or not Axanar raises one million dollars has little to do with using Kickstarter or Indiegogo. The amount raised will be determined by the donors who support the work based on the quality of the work being produced (and the perks, of course!). I do not think what other independent film companies did on Indiegogo is relevant. Veronica Mars Kickstarter raised over five million dollars.
